Meet Rob!

Rob Jackson

Rob is a Technical Recruiter on our Recruiting Team. Learn more about Rob and his Life at and outside of Quora below:

Where are you located and what’s your favorite thing about your city?

I'm located in Montreal, Canada. Montreal is an incredibly vibrant city where you can find a mix of the modernity of today's North American cities old French-influenced architecture. It's a city made for its climate with tons of festivals in the summer that page hommage to the awesome art culture and lot's of events in the winter as well (be sure to bundle up!). One of the most subtle yet under-appreciated things about Montreal is that no building can be built higher than Mount-Royal (the mountain our island city is build on and around). Which makes the skyline very visible in many areas of Montreal and seeing the city from higher ground is just incredible (particularly in fall) when you can see the mix of urbanism with plant life!

Why did you choose to join Quora?

I chose Quora as it's always been one of my favourite products. I love apps that can teach me something and not the ones that have me scrolling endlessly with no added value. It has always been an employer of choice for me and I knew it was an incredible fit when I met members of my team in the interview process. It still rings true that Quora colleagues are some of the best I've ever worked with in my ~8 years as a Recruiter.

What is your role at Quora and what does it entail?

I'm a Recruiter at Quora. My role entails understanding the business as a whole, collaborating with hiring managers to better understand the impact of their domain and how it fits with the organizations goals and finally, sourcing and matching talent to the culture and needs of the team and organization at large. I try to do my best to ensure the experience for each candidate we meet is unique and at a respectable standard.

What kind of impact does your team have on the company as a whole?

Our team is responsible for understanding the business needs, collaborating with managers and identifying the right talent that aligns with Quora's mission and values.

Which one of our core values at Quora do you most resonate with?

I'd say all but as a Recruiter: Mission-First Agility and Awareness. Quora's mission is long-term and as such, finding talent that resonates with our mission is imperative. We want employees that will be here long-term to see through the impact of their contributions and allow us to achieve our goals. I have to be agile as a recruiter since business requirements can shift and that can have an impact on how we evaluate talent. Being able to pivot quickly is a superpower necessary for success. Finally, Awareness; I feel empathy is an important component of being a recruiter and understanding that our decisions can impact someone's livelihood is something I don't take lightly. Being aware of that our decisions and communication need to be executed in a way that shows respect and empathy is something that resonates deeply with me.

What do you like to do outside of work?

At this stage in my life, spending as much time with my daughter as possible. She's exploring new things as a toddler which forces me to do more than binge shows and chill. Right now, we like to do arts and crafts, play in the snow, sing and dance, and go to the park. When I was younger my favourite pastime was drawing and painting so I hope she grows into that artistic side I know she has.

What has been your favorite memory working at Quora?

Our recruiting happy hour! We got together on Zoom after hours and made cocktails. The ingredient contained champagne and little did I know, it was not a good idea to shake the ingredients in a shaker. It fizzed over and spilt everywhere! So while this was happening I was grabbing paper towels to dry it up before my dog got to it while the team was watching; they screen captured me with the paper towel roll under my arm and now the image is immortalized as a emoji in Slack.

Why have you chosen to stay at Quora?

I still love the product and think there is so much work to be done. In recruitment and as a company. Investing more in content creators is something that will take us even closer to meeting our goal as THE go-to platform for expert information but also the investment in Poe and AI is extremely exciting to be part of.
